Hugh and Stephanie Hernesman have been married eight years, have two young children and have both been assistants with the Ball State University women's volleyball team since 2007.
Now, the Hernesmans are going to try their hand at taking over their own volleyball program together.
The Northwestern State University athletics Web site on Tuesday announced the hiring of the Hernesmans as the Demons' co-head coaches, pending the approval of the school's Board of Supervisors and the University of Louisiana system.
The Hernesmans will be handed a Northwestern State program with lots to improve. The Demons finished last season with a 3-21 overall record, including a 2-14 mark in the Southland Conference, missing the league's postseason tournament for the first time in five seasons.
The previous coach, Brittany Uffelman, resigned on Nov. 19 to "pursue other professional opportunities," according to nsudemons.com.
Hugh was named Ball State coach Dave Boos' top assistant when Boos was hired in February 2007. Other than being the top assistant, he was also in charge of recruiting for the Cardinals.
Stephanie was a volunteer assistant under Boos upon his hiring. She coached two seasons before taking off the 2009 season to take care of the couple's two young children — Austin (3) and Emma (eight months).
