Funding loss for higher education was just one item on the Higher Education Commission's agenda for the working session Thursday night.
Commissioner Theresa Lubbers briefed the committee on the status of funding loss to Indiana state universities at the meeting.
Commission President Mike Smith said by next week the commission will have met with representatives from each state university, and the commission will request that universities respond to their recommendations by Friday. The commission will not make a full recommendation to the governor until they have heard from each university, he said.
"We will meet with the full commission to make sure everyone has input before we make our recommendation," he said. "We want it to be inclusive."
The commission has already met with Indiana, Purdue, Ball State, Indiana State and Ivy Tech universities, and will meet with University of Southern Indiana and Vincennes University next week.
Smith said these meetings were productive.
"We met so they would gain a better understanding of the process," Smith said. "We've established a working rhythm."
Suggested solutions—
- Share the distribution of loss based on appropriations from the legislature
- Make distributions based on grade completion and performance
- Leave it to the full discretion of the universities
