OUR VIEW: Just a little poke

AT ISSUE: Students should stop by the Atrium for H1N1 vaccinations today and Thursday

The state gave Ball State University about all the H1N1 vaccines it'll need to last the winter. It has about 7,700 left and will be administering them free of charge in the Atrium today and Thursday.

The Amelia T. Wood Health Center had a table set up Tuesday, but no more than 200 people showed up to get one. We should be flocking to the vaccines.

But feelings that the worst has passed or that the virus' danger is being blown out of proportion seem to be floating around and infecting more people than the virus.

The state is allocating more vaccines to college campuses in hopes of stifling an outbreak after Winter Break. Everyone will be home. Some of us will be around a bunch of kids who like to cough or sneeze anywhere, and if you're lucky enough for them to cover their mouths, they probably won't wash their hands. Many of us will be going somewhere in which several cases have been documented and bringing those germs back here.

Most people don't die, they just have a terrible week or two. But Indiana has had at least 33 H1N1-related deaths since June. It's the worst pandemic the world has seen in about 70 years.

Don't wait for someone at Ball State or someone you know to die before you realize this is a legitimate threat. It can be easy to avoid if the proper precautions are taken, but it's a serious matter regardless. Even if you think the whole issue is being blown out of proportion, what will it hurt to take five minutes out of your day to stop by a table in the Atrium to get a quick shot? You're afraid of needles? Fine, go get one of the FluMist vaccinations.

Chances are you won't get swine flu either because the whole thing is a hoax or germs are afraid of your immune system or because you regularly wash your hands. But precautions are there to help make sure nothing goes wrong. The prefix is pretty clear.

The several e-mails you get from the university every week aren't the most convincing. Many people probably just delete them without reading them. But the Health Center is trying to bring the vaccines to the students by setting up booths in one of the most traveled areas on campus and at Worthen Arena for a basketball game.

Stop being lazy, stubborn, paranoid or whatever is making you avoid vaccination. It's just a little poke in the arm.
