OUR VIEW: The giving season

AT ISSUE: People need help, we have the resources to help them, go forth and help

The Ball State University and Muncie communities had a good weekend of generosity.

Muncie Mission and members of Ball State's greek community held "Stuff the Bus" on Saturday. People donated more than 1,000 cans of food on top of monetary donations.

Union Chapel Ministries and Commonway held "Be the Match" on Sunday to help a Ball State student and her sister with an extremely rare genetic immunodeficiency disorder. More than 800 people were tested to be bone marrow matches for them and about 50 people volunteered.

Charlie's Library had a benefit concert with the proceeds going to TOMS Shoes.

The area has a lot of charity events throughout the year, but this is the time of year when people always become more aware of charity work and giving. The holiday season seems to get us in the spirit of helping out other people and society usually does a pretty good job. We all should participate and we should be in the giving mood all year, not just during the holidays.

Someone always has it tougher and compassion and understanding should be second nature for us. Our good fortune can turn bad quicker than you'd think and we could end up needing help. Nobody wants to be in a position that would rely on other people's help and charity. But some people do and they deserve our help.

Taking care of each other is everyone's responsibility. We realize we have to look out for number one to an extent. But make a few small sacrifices and give what you can. Your donation of a few cans of SpaghettiOs to a food drive won't change the world, but you'll be helping someone who needs it.

When you see a charity event or fundraiser, do your best to volunteer or donate. Start your own event for your favorite cause. Helping out in the community, or anywhere for that matter, builds unity and betters people's lives. It can only help and it could be fun.

Chances are you'll have the resources and opportunity to make some sort of donation in the near future. Take the opportunity; regardless of how much you can give, someone will appreciate it.
