Greeks 'stuff the bus' to help Muncie Mission

Members of Ball State University's Greek community helped Muncie Mission, a local food pantry, by hosting a canned food drive this weekend.

The second annual "Stuff the Bus" took place Saturday at the Marsh at 3910 W. Bethel Ave.

"Stuff the Bus" is part of the "Feed Muncie" campaign created as a greek community philanthropy project. The goal of "Feed Muncie" is to donate more than 5,000 canned goods to Muncie Mission.

Lauren McHugh, a graduate student who works in the Student Life office, said she was happy with the results of "Stuff the Bus."

Saturday's event collected more than 1,000 cans, along with many monetary donations, she said.

McHugh said she thought Marsh was a great location to have the event.

"It's great because people can donate after they go and buy their groceries," she said. "In this economic time, it's important for [the community] to come together."

Rachel Hill, the Panhellenic community service and philanthropy chair, said she thought "Stuff the Bus" was a great way to bring the Muncie and greek communities together.

Representatives from Muncie radio station WLBC were also there to encourage people to donate canned goods for the cause.

Alex Perdue, vice president of community outreach for the Interfraternity Council, said he was happy with the support.

"This is our second year and we are hoping to make this a tradition," he said. "It's refreshing to see people's willingness to give. I think it has to do with the holidays."

Perdue thought of the slogan for this year's "Stuff the Bus": "Feeding the Muncie community one can at a time."

He said he was surprised with how much help Muncie Mission needs this season.
At the end of the event, all 1,080 canned goods were stuffed into one Muncie Mission truck.

Perdue said he was proud with the event as a whole.

"We put in a lot of hard work and dedication and I think it paid off well for Muncie Mission," he said.
