KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A pair of big defensive plays by Ball State University helped it open a 6-0 lead after the first quarter at Western Michigan University.
After stopping the Broncos on fourth down at the Cardinals' 32-yard line, the visitors took the ball into field goal position on their first possession of the game. Ian McGarvey connected on a 31-yarder to open the scoring.
McGarvey added a 45-yard field goal six minutes later, following an interception by cornerback Jason Pinkston. Western Michigan quarterback Tim Hiller was hit by linebacker Spain Cosby on the play.
Western Michigan's only offensive threat of the game was on its opening possession, but the drive fizzled out. The Cardinals were able to get effective pressure on Hiller and the Broncos turned the ball over on downs.
