OUR VIEW: What we learned this summer

AT ISSUE: The end to the summer sessions at Ball State is Friday,

With the final summer session finally coming to a close this week, these last 10 weeks of summer sessions at Ball State University definitely have been interesting - yeah, that might be the right word to describe it.

The university survived a summer without any huge scandals, such as racist notes being found in the office of a Ball State coach or a university professor being arrested. Congratulations, just make sure to be careful as you pop open those champagne bottles.

Despite no major scandal, this summer had its moments of excitement and intrigue. Everything from the state budget debate effecting Ball State's funding to students almost being crowned Miss Indiana and Miss Ohio occurred during the last 10 weeks.

In case you missed any of it, here's what we learned during these summer sessions.

  • Rep. Mike Pence is willing to go up against President Jo Ann Gora, Ball State and the Muncie City Council when it comes to his new stance on zero earmarks.
  • If you are a popular place for students to go to in Muncie - i.e. Cheeseburger in Paradise and Doc's on Dill - you might become closed.
  • Harry Potter fans in Muncie are willing to go to the midnight showings, but not have wizard duels in the lobby of the movie theater.
  • Filming a music video on the top of a Ball State parking garage, like Eight Stories High did, won't necessarily get you arrested.
  • Muncie Mayor Sharon McShurley might be a little unorthodox in some of things she does - but hey, so are some of the people in her district.
  • A Ball State professor did research to determine that summer noise can be more harmful to students. Guess that's another reason to throw parties during the school year.
  • The power soccer team had a great first year. It also proved they were a true Ball State sports team - advancing to the semifinals of a national tournament and then losing.
  • It's sad that someone could hack into a Ball State server. It's even sadder that the university has to send out an e-mail asking students not to put their social security number on their iWeb account.
  • It's wrong to deface "Frog Baby," but she did look a little bit cuter in the pink-chalk bikini someone drew on her.
  • Ball State students like to find weird ways to make cross country trips, such as riding a bike or walking.
  • No student cared enough about the proposed tuition increase to attend Monday's public hearing about the issue.
  • Never drive a bulldozer too close to a fraternity house - especially when the house has a basement.
  • After countless hours of debate and university officials worrying, nothing changed with the amount of funding the state is giving Ball State. Nice anticlimatic ending to a month-long political battle in the state house.
  • Ball State won't be sending a student to compete in the 2010 Miss America Pageant. However, junior and Miss Ohio contestant Ellen Bryan did give us one thing better - her slogan "When thunder roars, go indoors," which promoted lightning awareness.
  • The people who play at Westside Park may be the best basketball team in Muncie, minus the Ball State women's basketball team and maybe the men's basketball team.
  • Offensive line coach Jason Eck is the coolest assistant coach at Ball State for using Twitter and saying he will tweet in the lockeroom before games. Thanks @Coach_Eck.
  • There is a Twitter account called Ball State News, but it didn't tweet once this summer. Guess, nothing noteworthy happened this summer.
  • The football team is expecting students to wake up early on Saturdays this fall to watch them play their four games starting at noon. We know you don't have a whole lot of control over the time you play because of television, but come on, know your audience.
  • The Trekies will be coming out for Quad Bash in August as Friday Nite Filmworks will show the new "Star Trek" movie.
  • The Delaware County Fair might have based its lineup off of comedian Jeff Foxworthy's redneck sketch. Seriously, hog wrestling?
