Four religions to gather for peace forum

The Students for Open Minded Academics will hold a Student Interfaith Peace Forum today to discuss what specific religions are doing for peace.

Assistant professor of religious studies Michael Roemer said SOMA, a religious studies student club, will start the forum with short student presentations at 5 p.m. in the Forum Room of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.

Four students representing Reformed Judaism, Protestant Christianity, Buddhism and the Druid religious beliefs will discuss what their religion is as a whole and what they are doing individually in their religion for peace, Roemer said. The students will further discuss the positives and negatives of what is going on.

"I asked them to be a little more critical," Roemer said about the presentation material.

Roemer said peace was defined broadly and covered domestic, gender, racial, local and national forums.

Besides the goal of critically thinking about a religious stand on peace, Roemer said students would discuss possible interfaith activities.

"How can we work for peace across religion?" Roemer asked. "We can cross religious boundaries to talk about peace."

The forum will end with a question and answer session followed by food for anyone attending, Roemer said.

He said the event would end around 7 p.m. and was open to anyone interested in attending.
