WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State brings record back to .500

The Ball State University women's tennis team picked up two wins this weekend, breaking even on the season.

"I'm happy to be back at .500," coach Kathy Bull said.

The Cardinals defeated the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee 5-2 on Friday, and University of Wisconsin Green Bay 6-1 on Sunday.

The Cardinals grabbed the first point against Wisconsin Milwaukee by winning two of the three doubles matches. Georgina Thomson and Dena Boulieris claimed an 8-6 victory at the No. 1 spot, while Rachel Surowiec and Hanna Oman picked up an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, the Cardinals won four of six matches against Wisconsin Milwaukee. Sarah Hebble won 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot. Kylee Johnson picked up a victory at the No. 3 spot, Hanna Oman was victorious at the No. 4 spot and Georgina Thomson rounded out the Cardinal winners at the No. 5 spot.

In Sunday's matchup against Wisconsin Green Bay, Ball State won its second match in just three days.

The Cardinals' only loss came at No. 1 doubles. At the No. 2 spot Johnson and Hebble scored a 8-4 victory while Suroweic and Oman won at the No. 3 position with the same score.

The Cardinals won all six singles matches against Green Bay. Hebble recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 1 spot. After losing the first set, Boulieris extended her match to three sets before defeating Kelly Stadum 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Johnson picked up a win at No. 3 singles, and Oman was victorious at the No. 4 spot. Thomson and Surowiec finished off the Cardinal sweep in singles play by recording victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.

Bull said her illness- and injury-plagued team was a little healthier this weekend, and that it helped the Cardinals' performance over the weekend.

"Hanna played four matches for us," Bull said. "That helps a lot."

However, the Cardinals are not completely healthy. Sophomore Hayley Hall did not play at all this weekend because of a lower back injury. Hall had surgery during the summer, but still experiences pain and is often unable to compete. Hall will get an MRI this week.

Bull also said the doubles teams still need work.

Ball State will have 12 days off before they travel to San Antonio to take on the University of Incarnate Word at 1 p.m. March 12.
