SOFTBALL: Ball State battles in close games during road trip

Cardinals finish 6-7 in Spring Break trip with lacking offense

The Ball State University softball team joined thousands of Spring Breakers last week, as it looked to spend its break in Florida. Unlike the vast majority of its peers however, the team didn't head to the beaches, but rather, the field.

The Cardinals played 13 games during their 10-day road trip, winning six and bringing their overall record to 8-10. Of the seven losses, three went to extra innings, while the Cardinals came up one run short in two of the other games and two runs short in the other two.

"We played in a lot of really close games," third baseman Kate Wilczynski said. "I think as we progress through the season, those games will fall in our favor."

Pitcher Laura Masch said the team's offense seemed to be lacking during some of the games, but the defense made up for the lack of production at the plate.

The biggest story coming from the 10-day trip is junior college transfer Jen Reifschneider. Reifschneider hit three home runs in Florida, which brings her season total to seven, one shy of the Ball State single-season record.

The team is now looking ahead to its first home game of the season, as it plays host to Valparaiso University in a doubleheader Wednesday.
