There's been a lot to celebrate this academic year in Ball State University athletics. Our fighting Cardinal football team's tremendous success put the athletics department in the spotlight for a good reason.
Quite a change from recent years.
The stories were no longer about scandals and losing streaks, but of victories and camaraderie.
The streak of success continues with the women's basketball team that has made it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The team has also this year accrued the most season wins in program history.
With 25 wins under its belt the team moves ahead toward a first-round game against the eight-time national champion Lady Volunteers of the University of Tennessee.
Whichever way this game ends up, it's a monumental and memorable occasion. Students should celebrate and be clamoring for the fan bus to Western Kentucky.
Tip-off will be about 9:30 p.m., and the bus is not expected back until early Monday morning. But we're college students. We're used to late nights.
Students could do themselves, their peers and the school a great service by attending the game. Women's basketball crowds are, on average, not that large when compared with men's. However, this is a chance to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity at a relatively manageable cost.
Sleeping on the way back to Muncie is always an option, too.
Registration for the fan bus has been extended to today at 3 p.m. Students can call the Ball State ticket office at 765-285-1474 or call 1-888-BSU-TICKET to reserve a spot on the bus.
If it is truly impossible for students to attend the game, they should still watch it. Every ounce of support and school spirit helps.
Those who choose to stay at home can still cheer on the team in spirit. Benefits are two-fold; students can support their peers and know what everyone is talking about Monday.
To feel more part of the action from home Sunday night, try a rousing rendition of "Single Ladies" to bring you closer to the team.
Who knows, they just might win.
