Ball State University's greeks filled Pruis Hall on Saturday night to support their community for the fifth annual Miss Greek Pageant, put on by the Sigma Nu fraternity.
As Sigma Nu's main philanthropic event, the pageant raised $2,243.29 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware County. The event also served to promote the best representatives of each sorority.
Each woman represented her sorority by displaying creative costumes, unique talents and evening wear and finally ended the ceremony by answering an on-the-spot interview question. Delta Zeta's Lisa Canary won the competition, with Kappa Delta's Tara Miller and Alpha Chi Omega's Krista Swaidner taking second and first runners up.
In addition to giving the proceeds of the event to the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, the pageant also awards the winning sister with a $500 scholarship.
Canary said the winner also gets a mark of respect that will last a lifetime.
"It is a huge honor to be crowned as Miss Greek," Canary said backstage after her crowning. "I feel I can better the greek community and use this new honor to get out there and make the greeks even closer and lead by example."
In the past the pageant has been held in the fall semester, but this year marked the first time it was held in the spring.
"We used to throw it around November," Sigma Nu President Dusty Pettit said, "but that's when everyone's formals were and the participation was low, so we just decided there was nothing better to do in February and to do it then."
Free Rockstar beverages were distributed throughout the event, keeping the energy level in the auditorium at a constant high. During the intermission there was a raffle giving the audience an opportunity to win cases of Rockstar, a $50 gift card to Best Buy (courtesy of Student Government Association slate Cardinal Collaboration) and a mini-fridge.
Crowd members sporting clothing with supportive messages were enthusiastic as they chirped for their favorite contestants and cheered for raffle wins.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is an organization that matches the youth of the community with mentors that will serve as good role models. It has been making an impact on the Delaware County community since 1971 and has been benefiting from Sigma Nu's Miss Greek pageant since 2000.
