The Ball State University field hockey team announced today that it signed four players to national letters of intent for the 2009 season.
The Cardinals signed Devon Bell from Marlton, N.J., Leann Carroll from Birdsboro, Pa., Morgan Hammer from Pittsburgh and Marissa Weachter from Manheim, Pa.
Bell was a four-year stater in high school and was a captain her senior season. She earned all-conference second team honors her senior year and won the Joel Ferrell Sportsmanship Award at the Junior Olympics. She participated in National Futures Tournaments, the National Field Hockey Festival and National Indoor Tournament for the past three years.
Carroll was a four-year letterwinner in high school and was voted team captain and MVP as a senior. She was her team's leading scorer in both her junior and senior seasons. She earned all-division first team honors as a sophomore and made the all-Berks County team her junior and senior seasons.
Hammer was a three-year letterwinner in high school and started every game except for two since her sophomore season. She had a 91 percent save average as a goalie. She was a team captain as a senior. She was named ESPN Radio High School Player of the Week her junior season and was an All-America nominee as a senior.
Weachter was a three-year letterwinner in high school and led her team in scoring both her junior and senior seasons. She had 24 career goals and 11 assists. She was a captain, her team's MVP and received first academic honors as a senior. She was named first team league all-star both her junior and senior seasons and was a Blue Ridge Cable TV Player of the Game in September 2008. She won a gold medal as pool champions in her third year at the National Field Hockey Festival in 2008.
"This class is going to be able to bring a lot to the table," coach Annette Payne said in a press release. "Up on the front lines or in the back, this class brings skills, passion, energy and talent."
