FIELD HOCKEY: 9 Cardinals named to academic squad

The Ball State University field hockey team had nine players earn a spot on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Academic Squad for the fifth-consecutive season Monday.

The NFHCA named Kristen Falk, CJ Hermes, Hannah Jones, Brooke MacGillivary, Caitlin Maguire, Kaitlin Mitchell, Katie Norris, Melanie Pasillas and Maura Sawicki as the Cardinals who earned the recognition.

The squad recognizes collegiate field hockey players who have at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA through the first semester of the 2008-09 academic year. The nine honorees tie for the third-most in Ball State history, behind the 1997 and 2008 teams that had 12 players on the squad.

Pasillas earned the honor from the NFHCA all four years of her collegiate career. MacGillivary and Sawicki, who are both juniors, earned the award for the third time in their careers. Mitchell, a sophomore who is also a reporter for The Ball State Daily News, earned the honor for the second consecutive year.

Jones - a sophomore - and Falk, Hermes, Maguire and Norris - all freshmen - earned the honor for the first time in their careers.

Ball State finished the 2008 season with a 2-17 overall record and 1-9 Mid-American Conference record. The Cardinals lost 5-1 to Central Michigan University in the first round of the MAC Tournament.

MacGillivary was named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Field Hockey Team in December. She was also named to the All-Mid-American Conference Second Team.

Pasillas, Sawicki and senior Jodi Mann each earned Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention honors.
