In Ball Gymnasium, the air was filled with flying balls coming from all directions as dodgeball teams fought fearlessly for triumph.
Alpha Omicron Pi's second annual dodgeball week concluded this Sunday with their dodgeball tournament, in which various fraternity chapters and other teams participated to help raise money for Arthritis and Dystonia research.
Jessica Moss, senior speech pathology major and co-organizer of the tournament, said the number of teams participating in the tournament doubled from last year's event. Without counting sponsorships, AOII raised more than $1,000 this year, Moss said.
The four hour tournament was divided into male, female and co-ed categories, every team fighting its way to first place.
Moss said she was excited to be contributing to a philanthropy through the tournament.
"Fraternities and sororities focus more on charity and that's what I enjoy," she said. "So I feel like this is a rewarding thing that I can do for the community."
Sophomore early childhood education major Rachael Baker is a member of Sigma Kappa, this year's winner in the female category.
"It was a great time to be with my sisters and with other people," she said, "and support a cause at the same time."
Freshman exercise science major Alex Gehle said his team signed up for the tournament to support the cause and to have some fun on a Sunday afternoon.
"We thought it was a good cause," he said. "And we wanted to do something on Sunday so we said 'why not?'"
Gehle said he thought is was a good idea to have a fun event that supported the research.
"It's great that everybody is here Sunday for a friendly competition and it goes to a great cause," he said. "It's great for students and its great for Ball State."
