Ball State police arrest skateboarder

Ball State University police arrested a student on suspicion of resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct Tuesday after an officer said he warned the man to stop skateboarding, but the man ignored the order, police said.

Delaware County Jail was holding Drake Turner, 21, on $3,500 bond as of Tuesday afternoon after police arrested him on the respective Class A and Class B misdemeanor charges.

Officer Scott Stafford of the Ball State Police Department said Turner was skateboarding near the Scramble Light when an officer on a bicycle warned him to stop. Turner ignored the officer and continued to skateboard. Officers chased down Turner and caught him at the top of the stairs near the northwest entrance to the Music Instruction Building, Stafford said.

According to Indiana law, if Turner is convicted of his Class A misdemeanor of resisting law enforcement, he could face up to a year in prison and a maximum $5,000 fine. If turner is convicted of his Class B disorderly conduct misdemeanor, the possible sentence carries a maximum of 180 days in prison and a $1,000 fine.

Ball State policy prohibits skateboarding anywhere on Ball State property. Signs around campus say skateboarding is prohibited on campus. Anyone caught skateboarding can receive a warning or a $30 fine.
