With the first day of the Mid-American Conference Championships polished off, the Ball State University track and field team is seated fifth in the invitational at Kent, Ohio.
Out of the 18 points earned by the Cardinals, junior Ali Bishel collected 10 with a time of 16:39.8 in the 5,000-meter run to give her a first-place lead.
Teammate sophomore Thekla Lorenz contributed the remaining eight points during the pentathlon match. Lorenz took first place in the long jump with a leap of 19-02 -+. She also finished the 60-meter hurdle race with a second-place time of 9.02 and completed the 800-meter run in 2:20.40 for fifth. In field events, Lorenz placed ninth in shot put with a toss of 32-02 -+ and 10th in high jump with a l5-02 -+ height.
Both set NCAA provisional marks with their times.
At the end of Friday's events, Akron leads the competition with 39 points.
The triple jump will resume the meet 11:45 a.m. Saturday.
