SOFTBALL: BSU ready for new year

Cards open season in Georgia tournament, return to Muncie following Spring Break

OFFENSE

  • After graduating two power hitters, the Cardinals have become a team that is based off its speed, coach Craig Nicholson said. The team is going to focus more on utilizing its speed on the bases to score runs rather than driving them in with the long ball.
  • Offseason hitting adjustments by Elizabeth Milian and Kathryn Wilczynski are also expected to help drive runs in.

PITCHING

  • The Cardinals return all of their pitchers from last season, including the No. 1 pitcher, Milian. With two full seasons under her belt, Milian has been in many big games for the team. Nicholson expects his battled-hardened ace to keep his team in many games this season, he said.

DEFENSE

  • The Cardinals return seven of nine starters. Adding transfer Jen Reifschneider at first will add depth and experience, Nicholson said.

2008 Stats

  • Elizabeth Milian led the Cardinals in pitching last year with an 18-14 record and a 2.38 ERA. Nicholson said she will be a constant for the team this year. He also said Milian has adjusted her swing during the offseason, which should improve her offensive game as well.
  • Alicia Barkley led the Cardinals as she set the school record for hits last year as a freshman.
  • Lisa Rozanski led the Cardinals in runs scored last year, and Nicholson said he expects the same from his junior center fielder this year.
