Sexual Assualt Week Wall of Healing ends

SVS says event was successful because survivors comfortable

The Office of Victim Services' 13th annual Sexual Assault Awareness Week comes to a close today.

Speakers had resources for victims of assault, self-defense classes and lectures on building healthy relationships. The Wall of Healing also was displayed in the Art and Journalism Building.

The canvas wall was covered with messages from men and women supporting sexual assault victims, including advice, poems and drawings.

Sophomore sports administration major Jenna Day said most of the students' submissions were messages of hope sent anonymously to the Office of Victim Services.

Tabitha Mpamira, intern at Office of Victim Services, said anonymous postings have been successful because it makes survivors more comfortable.

"Sexual assault is a sensitive subject and people affected need an outlet," she said. "The Wall of Healing is that outlet."

Senior elementary education and special education major Elizabeth Delucio said she stopped to look at the display because it was something that affected many people and no one talks about it.

"The display is eye-opening and very heartfelt and real," she said. "This display brings the power back to women."
