OUR VIEW: Dear reader, will you be my valentine?

Will you be my valentine?

I know sometimes I don't live up to your expectations, but I want to make it up to you.

There have been times in the past when I've said things you didn't want to hear, and there have been times when we've disagreed. These kinds of problems are to be expected in any relationship.

But it's not OK for me to miss things that are important to you, like Valentine's Day.

I know how much this holiday means to you - I can see it in your eyes every time a Hallmark commercial featuring a teddy bear comes on.

I'm going to do it right this year; I promise. For weeks I've been planning a day you'll want to brag to all your friends about.

I've taken the time to hide a few little surprises around your daily routine. I know personal notes and candies aren't worth much, but I'm sure they'll make you smile.

Of course, I made reservations at your favorite restaurant long ago. I definitely didn't make the rookie mistake of waiting until the last minute, and I wouldn't dream of making you stand in line for a table anywhere.

If I had made that mistake, though, I know how I'd cover. I'd cook you a romantic dinner of your favorite foods with candles and everything. I'd even use a tablecloth.

After dinner I'm to give you your present, something I know you're going to love.

I know you'd always be glad to accept jewelry, but I can't pull that off in this economy. Besides, I think you'd rather have a present that really means something special.

I considered mixing you a CD, getting some of your favorite flowers (not boring roses) and finding a book I know you'd love, but I went another way.

Instead I decided to frame a few of your favorite photos. You're always talking about how you never get prints anymore, so I had a few made for you, and I was sure to choose pictures that are important to you.

None of my Valentine's Day efforts is particularly pricey, but I know that isn't what matters to you.

You just want to know I've been thinking of you and the things you care about.

It wasn't even hard, really, to plan a day I knew you'd love.

I just had to give it a little thought.

Love,

DN
