Officials say dance marathon to feature more activities

Ball State University students will be asked to stand on their feet for 12 hours Saturday to help raise money for Riley Hospital for Children.

The 10th annual Ball State Dance Marathon, an event that attracted nearly 100 dancers and raised $14,000 last year, will be from 1 p.m Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday morning in the Alumni Center.

"We put a lot more time and effort planning the marathon in five- to 10-minute increments, so we have a lot of activities, music and food planned," Amy Heline, public relations chair for the marathon, said.

Dancers will learn a new portion of a larger routine at the beginning of each hour, she said.

There will be raffles for iPods, music and other items for the dancers between each routine, she said.

The marathon was started at Ball State by Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Phi Mu sorority as a philanthropic event and remained exclusively greek for eight years. However, two years ago the marathon opened to the whole campus, Heline said.

There are 15 marathons in Indiana that raise money for the hospital, and more nationwide, according to the event's Web site. The money is raised through pledges from family, friends or corporations and goes entirely to the hospital, according to the Web site.
