Muncie branch of United States Postal Service removes collection mailboxes

The Muncie branch of the United States Postal Service is making adjustments to accommodate the unsteady economy by removing five blue collection mailboxes from use.

Mailboxes located at 3721 S. Madison St., 3230 S. Madison St., 2150 W. White River Boulevard, 3460 N. Tillotson and 2905 W. Bethel avenues are scheduled for removal in two weeks.

According to the press release, the Postal Service conducts density tests to determine which boxes should be discontinued. If the test shows customers are depositing fewer than 25 pieces of mail a day, the box is retired from service.

To avoid inconveniencing customers, a sign is posted two weeks prior to the discontinuation to make them aware of the change and redirect people to another collection box close by.

In the press release, Kim Yates, Postal Service spokeswoman for the Greater Indiana District, said cutting costs to combat the declining mail volume is important for the long-term financial success of the Postal Service.
