MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards hit milestone with win No. 1,000

The Ball State University men's volleyball reached another milestone Friday in its 44-year program history.

Ball State defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering 30-13, 30-25, 30-23 in front of 816 people at Worthen Arena for its 1,000 all-time win.

Ball State joins UCLA as the only two men's volleyball team to win at least 1,000 matches in program history.

"It was a fun environment tonight," coach Joel Walton said. "You could tell that people came out to support the program, not just this year's team, but to honor all of the great things that Ball State men's volleyball has done for Muncie and Ball State."

All but two players on Ball State's (3-4, 1-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) active roster had playing time during the sweep.

Middle attacker Ben Irwin and outside attacker James Emmings each had a match-high seven kills.

This was the first match Irwin has started this season. The senior replaced all-conference middle attacker Matt McCarthy, who did not play Friday.

After having .600 attack percentage in the 17-point game one win, Walton pulled starting outside attacker Todd Chamberlain and middle attacker J.D. Gasparovic. The coach also removed starting setter Ethan Pheister and replaced him with Daniel Penrod to begin the third game.

The third game was the first time Penrod, a redshirt freshman, had played at setter. Penrod finished the game with 13 assists as Ball State had a .364 attack percentage.

Walton said he was pleased with the way team rallied around Penrod in the third game.

"[Penrod] is the type of kid where being out there, especially for our 1,00th win, is special for him," Walton said.
