A career-high 22 points from senior forward Rob Giles and four players with double-digit scoring totals wasn't enough for the Ball State University basketball team Wednesday night, as the Cardinals lost 71-67 to host University of Toledo at Savage Arena.
The loss for Ball State was its seventh straight in Toledo and moves the Cardinals (11-13, 6-6 Mid-American Conference) to 3-8 in road games this season, including 1-5 in MAC road contests.
"I am disappointed with my guys and our effort," coach Billy Taylor said. "We were very poor on defense, especially in the second half allowing 45 points and 63 percent shooting from the floor. We have to go back to work."
Giles highlighted four Cardinals in double-digit point totals with his 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, including 4-for-7 from 3-point range. He also added a game-high 12 rebounds to complete the double-double.
Freshman center Jarrod Jones added 14 points and seven rebounds for Ball State, while senior guard Brandon Lampley had 11 points and freshman forward Mo Hubbard added 10.
For Toledo (5-21, 3-9 MAC), senior guard Tyrone Kent led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Senior guard Jonathan Amos added 14 points and a game-high five assists, sophomore forward Justin Anyijong had 12 points and sophomore forward Mohamed Lo added 10 points and seven rebounds.
"We had poor transition defense, which stemmed from our 16 turnovers that allowed Toledo to get out in the open floor," Taylor said. "There wasn't enough communication in the half court defense, especially on screens, and we just fouled excessively which meant we had poor position defense."
With Ball State's loss and Western Michigan University's 46-38 win at home against Eastern Michigan University, the Cardinals and the Broncos are tied once again atop the MAC West Division standings at 6-6.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday for a non-conference matchup with Tennessee Tech University in ESPN BracketBuster action at Worthen Arena. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
