McKinley Mile lacks bicyclists

The Office of Student Life has not received a single application for the McKinley Mile bike race that's slated for April 4.

Graduate assistant Kristan Kanor said applications are due Monday. She said she hopes to see some last minute applicants, but she thinks the application date snuck up on students.

Last year the McKinley Mile had 28 participants on seven teams.

Cycling Club member Benjamin Hanus was on the men's team that won last year and said he thought it was a great chance to get a lot of people involved in what the club loved to do. The Cycling Club usually enters teams each year.

He said it's unfortunate that there aren't a lot of people participating.

"I think that it could be much bigger and has the potential to reach what the Bike-a-Thon once was 20 years ago," Hanus said.

The Bike-a-Thon was an annual event put on by Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity that drew crowds in the thousands. The event ended in 2004 when the fraternity left campus.

The McKinley Mile started last year thanks to the Office of Student Life, but it has yet to see the same popularity as the Bike-a-Thon.

Hanus said he heard people talking about putting teams together but blamed the lack of participation on insufficient advertising.

"I think that the Office of Student Life is doing a great job with it now," Hanus said. "But there is only so much they can do."

He said it will take a lot of work from more than one organization to build the Bike-A-Thon's legacy back up. If there was a way that the greek community could take a piece of this race back, it could really help the numbers increase as well as the level of competition, Hanus said.

"Lambda Chi did a great job with it when they used to run it," Hanus said. "It was their event."

He said the Cycling Club still planned to enter several teams this year because members have enjoyed participating in the event in the past.
