For the first time in recent memory, the Ball State University gymnastics team will travel to Southeast Missouri State University for a 7 p.m. contest to be broadcast live via webcast. The meet will be accessible through CBS affiliate KFVS12.com.
"I think [the webcast] is exciting because it's more exposure for us," coach Nadalie Walsh said. "It's not like an LSU or a Kentucky where they're only going to show one team. It's great to have our fans here at home able to support us across the distance."
The Cardinals (1-5, 0-5 Mid-American Conference) tied with Western Michigan University for last place in the MAC after their 191.900-193.325 loss to Eastern Michigan University four days ago.
Short rest has affected physical energy, but by and large, the gymnasts are ready to compete, Walsh said.
"A few of them are a little tired, but I think that they're excited to compete because it's a lot more fun than practice," Walsh said. "They're all paying really good attention to their detail and they want to get a big score."
Although gymnastics in the Midwest is not as widely recognized as other Division I sports, the Cardinals' trip to Southeast Missouri State can show the regional strides gymnastics is taking by MAC schools, Walsh said.
"We competed against [Southeast Missouri State] last year and only lost by a little less than a point," Walsh said. "We brought in nine [freshmen] and they brought in two, the only thing is [Southeast Missouri State] already knows how to hit [routines]. I just want them to go in there and keep their heads in it and make an impact."
