As he walked around the Atrium on Friday afternoon, John Kammer had one clear message for students: Support the Ball State University men's volleyball team.
It was hard for students eating to avoid that message.
Talking into a megaphone and handing out promotional mini volleyballs for about 30 minutes, Kammer - a Ball State fan for 25 years - said he wanted to make sure students know about today's 7:30 p.m. home match against IPFW.
"What we are trying to do is draw attention to the plight of these men's volleyball players," Kammer said. "They are team that have a potential to win a national championship."
In addition to passing out volleyballs, Kammer used the megaphone to introduce several of the men's volleyball players who were eating lunch at Atrium.
Outside attacker Todd Chamberlain said he liked the promotion.
"Any publicity is good publicity," he said.
Ball State (5-4, 1-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) is on a four-match winning streak and is one of the two MIVA teams to have an undefeated record in conference play. IPFW (7-4, 1-2 MIVA) enters the match in fourth place in the conference.
Planning to attend tonight's match, Kammer said he expects Ball State to sweep IPFW.
This is the first match of a two-match homestand for the Cardinals this weekend. Ball State will play No. 14 Loyola University on Saturday, which Kammer predicted Ball State would win in four games.
Kammer said he plans to do promotions similar to the one today before every homestand the rest of the season. He also said his overall goal was to have 10,000 people in attendance for Ball State's match against the defending NCAA Champions No. 3 Penn State University on April 17.
The Worthen Arena men's volleyball attendance record is 3,729 people, which was set in Ball State's season opener against No. 7 Stanford University.
"We are trying to use this guerrilla marketing to get primary attention," Kammer said.
