The start to freshman first baseman Ian Nielsen's Ball State University baseball career just got a little better.
Nielsen was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week after going 10-17 in the Cardinals opening series against Furman University. Nielsen compiled a .650 on-base percentage, reaching base 13 times. Nielsen hit a home run in his first collegiate at bat Friday and hit another Sunday. He drove in six runs, scored four times and had a slugging percentage of 1.000.
Other players recognized by the MAC were Kent State University infielder Greg Rohan, University at Buffalo pitcher Mike Stangroom and Central Michigan University pitcher Dan Taylor. Nielsen was the only player recognized who is not a senior.
Ball State junior pitcher Brad Piatt was also recognized as a top performer for his victory in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Piatt allowed one run on four hits in five innings to pick up the win.
The Cardinals split their series in Greenville, S.C., and will return to competition Friday against Indiana University in the Austin Peay Tournament.
