The Ball State University women's basketball team has gone undefeated against Mid-American Conference opponents so far this season. Ball State defeated Western Michigan University, its second MAC opponent this season, Saturday 70-67.
Ball State is 9-6 for the season and 2-0 against MAC teams. Ball State defeated Eastern Michigan University 62-55 on Wednesday. Ball State went 4-3 during Winter Break.
Coach Kelly Packard said she was proud of her team performing well at Western Michigan. Packard said she was familiar with the team and knew playing at Kalamazoo, Mich., would be difficult.
Packard said the team reacted slowly in the first half as Ball State trailed at halftime 41-33.
"I challenged them at the half," she said.After halftime, Ball State outscored its opponent 37-26.
Packard said the team has progressed during the break. She said her team is "really, really solid" whenever her team plays with intensity for a whole game.
Guard Audrey McDonald led the team in scoring with 19 points. She shot 5-8 from behind the three-point line.
Forward Danielle Gratton scored 16 points and led her team with six rebounds. Guard Porchia Green scored 13 points.
Packard said Green, who surpassed 1,000 points for her Ball State basketball career in the win, will be honored before Wednesday's game. She is the 19th player to have scored 1,000 points for Ball State women's basketball.
Freshman Amber Clark returned to the lineup during the break. She had a back injury and returned to the court Jan. 4 loss against St. Louis University.
Clark scored 10 points against Western Michigan.
Packard said Clark has played well and played good minutes beginning in the St. Louis game. Clark is limited when playing because she hasn't been able to work on cardiovascular training. However, Packard said she stretched Clark out during the Western Michigan game.
Freshman Jade Barber was also impressive during the break, Packard said. Barber scored 12 points against Eastern Michigan.Ball State will continue to play Michigan schools from the MAC when it plays Central Michigan Wednesday. The game begins at 7 p.m. at Worthen Arena.
