Ken Mills doesn't need to hear the horrors of war to grasp an understanding of its destructive powers.
He's lived it.
As a former infantry man in the Marines, Mills, like many military veterans, has witnessed things no one should. He chose to try to make a difference.
Mills, the president of Iraq Vets Against the War, Fort Wayne Chapter, is at Ball State University today and tomorrow promoting Eyes Wide Open, an event that will speak against the Iraq war. He watched over 146 pairs of empty military boots Monday afternoon, each representing one of the Indiana soldiers who have died in the Iraq war.
Mills' message is quite simple.
"This is the human cost of war," Mills said as he pointed at the floor of the Letterman Building lobby, where the empty boots stood in formation. "There could be 146 people standing there today, but there's not."
Minutes after the interview, Mills learned another Hoosier soldier died. For the rest of today and all of tomorrow, the Letterman Building lobby will have 147 pairs of empty military boots.
Mills will lead a forum for testimony from Iraq war veterans at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Letterman Building Rm. 125.
We want to know your personal experiences with the Iraq war and how those experiences have shaped your own opinions on the war. Send your thoughts to DayWatch editor Ryan Wood at daywatch@bsudailynews.com. We will use your feedback with our on-line coverage of Tuesday's forum.
