Motorist tips from Ball State Police Chief Deputy Bob Fey

As snow removal crews clear campus streets and sidewalks this afternoon, Ball State University Police Chief Deputy Bob Fey warns students to be weary of their vehicles.

Fey said students should take steps now to keep snow from burying their vehicles in parking spaces on or near campus.

"Right now is the time to dig out," Fey said. "Not Friday afternoon, when the snow is hard as a rock."

The snow stopped falling around 1 p.m. Wednesday, and multiple weather reports indicate flurries may be finished for the day.

Of course, this is Indiana, a state where weather reports can change on an hourly basis.

Even though snow is unexpected for tonight, Fey said tonight will be the peak danger time for motorists. As the snow is removed, Fey said, roads will be slicker because tires will be closer to the ice.

Outside of digging your vehicle out now, Fey provided other suggestions for motorists:

- Keep your wheels straight when you're backing your vehicle out of its parking spot and through a snowdrift. Your vehicle will get stuck if your front wheels turn to the side.

- Don't expect Ball State's motor assistance program to dig your car out. The motor assistance program will help you jump-start your vehicle's battery. It will not shovel your car out of a snowdrift.

- Make sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas if you're planning to travel a long distance soon. Also bring snacks, water, blankets and a cell phone with you.

- Drive your cars off campus parking lots tonight if you don't have a parking pass. Regular parking regulations will go back into effect 7 a.m. Thursday.
