Several prominent speakers will share their knowledge with Ball State University students and faculty this semester, including environmental lawyer Robert Kennedy Jr., newsman Ted Koppel and Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar.
Robert Koester, director of the Center for Energy Research, Education and Service, booked Kennedy as part of the Bracken Environmental Lecture Series. Koester said Kennedy was perfect because of his work with economic, environmental and social issues and his ideas complement this year's freshman common reader.
"[Booking Kennedy] amplifies the importance of the university's interest in sustainability and being a leader and a model in environmentally sound practices," he said.
The Bracken lecture series also has best-selling author Tom Friedman on its schedule, Koester said. Friedman accepts only 10 percent of his appearance invitations every year, he said.
According the Jan. 22 President's Perspective, an e-mail Ball State President Jo Ann Gora sends to the university, the Emerging Media Initiative's David Letterman Distinguished Professional Lecture and Workshop Series has booked some big names as well.
University of Pennsylvania professor Kathleen Hall Jamieson, newsman Ted Koppel and best-selling author Tom Kelley are scheduled to speak on campus throughout the Spring Semester.
This semester's keynote commencement speaker will be Sen. Lugar, according to the e-mail.
