ATHLETICS: Four members to be inducted to BSU Hall of Fame

The Ball State University athletics department announced Dec. 23 that it will induct four new members to its Hall of Fame.

Swimmer Joy Gallagher, women's volleyball player Cassy Herode, football coach Paul Schudel and placekicker Kenny Stucker were selected to the 2008-09 induction class.

Gallagher, who competed from 1993-97, finished her career with a school record 117 individual victories and 62 relay wins. In addition to winning back-to-back Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Year awards, she finished in ninth place in the 50-yard freestyle at the 1997 NCAA Championship and was named an honorable mention to the 1997 All-American Team.

Herode won three MAC championships during her four year career from 1991-94 and was the conference player of the year in 1994. She also became the second player in school history to make the All-MAC First Team as a junior and senior.

Schudel coached the Cardinals from 1985-94 and compiled a 60-48-4 record. During his tenure, Ball State won two MAC championships and played in two bowl games, the 1989 California Raisin Bowl and the 1993 Las Vegas Bowl. Schudel also is the first head coach to be inducted to the hall of fame since former men's basketball coach Steve Yoder was selected in 2001.

Stucker was the Cardinals' placekicker from 1988-91, and was named to the All-MAC First Team as a junior and senior. For his career Stucker was 62-of-87, including a career-long 52 yard field goal against Central Michigan University during his senior season.

In order to be inducted into the hall of fame, each athlete must receive a unanimous vote from the 11-member selection committee. Nominees must also wait 10 years following their Ball State careers to be eligible.

This is the eighth time since the hall of fame started in 1976 that less than five members were selected for the annual induction.

The induction ceremony for this year's class will be Jan. 30 at the Alumni Center.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children less than 12 years old. To order tickets call the Cardinal Varsity Club office at (765) 285-8120.
