WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards prepare for Raiders' invasion

BSU ends short break, looks to fix mistakes with Wright State visit

With only two days between games, Ball State University's women's basketball team will play Wright State University after a short turnaround at 7 p.m. in Worthen Arena.

Ball State lost its last game against the University of Louisville 82-51.

Coach Kelly Packard said the team is looking forward to playing back at Ball State for a game.

"We have shown a different confidence at home, and that's been apparent," she said.

Wright State is 3-4 and won its last game against Brigham Young University Hawaii 71-51. Ball State leads the overall series 7-4 against Wright State. Ball State defeated Wright State the last time the teams played last year 61-52.

Packard said the team will have to go through a short turnaround to correct its past mistakes and work on creating more of a mental toughness.

The team has to compete for the full 40 minutes of a game instead of just the first 20 minutes, she said.

Sophomore forward Emily Maggert said Packard had stressed the need to rebound for the team. The team rebounded well in the first half of the game, she said.

The sophomore said the team went through rebounding drills in practice to prepare for Wright State. Ball State was out rebounded by Louisville 57 to 23.

Maggert scored 15 points and had no rebounds against Louisville.

Packard also emphasized competing for the whole game no matter what the outcome, Maggert said. Also, Packard broke down the team's tendencies, she said.

During practice, the team also focused on Wright State's playing tendencies, she said.

Ball State will work on defending the shooters and also stressed on boxing out, Maggert said.

Maggert said it's difficult to adjust for an upcoming game that is in a few days, but the team will persevere.

"Everybody else is doing the same thing as we're doing," she said.

HistoryBall State leads the all-time series with Wright State 7-4. The Cardinals won last year's matchup in Dayton, Ohio, 61-52 for their first win of the season. Five Cardinals scored at least eight points in last year's victory, including 10 by guard Kiley Jarrett.
