MEN'S BASKETBALL: Not again: BSU loses to Evansville

Purple Aces beat Cards for 2nd time in last two seasons

The Ball State University men's basketball team was unable to extend its road game winning streak to three games on Saturday night as it lost 73-63 to the University of Evansville at Roberts Stadium.

The Cardinals (4-3) came into the game with two straight road wins against IPFW 54-52 on Dec. 1 and the University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin 82-69 on Nov. 25.

Ball State coach Billy Taylor was made unavailable to comment following the game.

The Purple Aces (5-1) were able to take advantage of sharp shooting senior guard Jason Holsinger. Holsinger led all scorers at the end of the first half with 13 points on 3-of-5 3-point shooting in the period. He ended with a game-high 18 points.

Evansville built off Holsinger's shooting touch by shooting 50 percent (24-of-48) from the field as a team, including an identical 3-of-6 from 3-point range and 75.9 percent (22-of-29) from the free throw line.

The Cardinals were unable to match the Purple Aces' offensive attack in their first trip to Evansville since the 1970-1971 season. Ball State was able to shoot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) from the field, but struggled from beyond the arc, hitting 3-of-13 3-point shots and 12-of-20 (60 percent) on free throws.

Senior forward Anthony Newell highlighted four Cardinal double-digit scorers. He earned his fifth double-double of the season in seven total games with a team-best 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Senior guard Brandon Lampley added 11 points, while sophomore forward Malik Perry and freshman center Jarrod Jones added 10 points for the Cardinals.

Other than Holsinger, two other scorers broke double digits for Evansville. Forwards Nate Garner and Shy Ely both totaled 12 points in the winning effort.

Ball State next plays its fourth in-state opponent of the season on Tuesday night as No. 9 Purdue University will make the trip to Worthen Arena for a 7 p.m. tipoff.

The game will be the first of a three-game homestand for the Cardinals, who then host Eastern Kentucky University on Saturday and Presbyterian College on Dec. 21.
