SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cardinals lose conference home opener

The Ball State University women's swimming and diving team lost 11 of 16 events to drop its conference home opener against Bowling Green State University on Friday.

Two of the Cardinals' (1-2, 0-2 Mid-American Conference) five wins came from freshman Emily Haifley. Haifley won the 100-yard breaststroke by 1.21 seconds and the 200-yard breaststroke by 0.79 seconds. She also finished in fifth place in the 200-yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:17.39.

Ball State also won both of the diving events.

The Cardinals finished in the top four of the 3-meter diving competition, with Lisa Maertin scoring a 265.95 to win the event. Maertin beat second-place Christina Riordan by 12.30 points. Riordan won the 1-meter diving event as four members of the Cardinals finished in the top four.

Ball State's next meet will be against the University of Akron starting 6 p.m. Friday at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
