Ball State looks across nation to find new VP

Search deadline has not been set, adminstrator says

The void in Ball State University's administration left by Tom Morrison has the university searching the nation for a replacement.

Morrison held several administrative positions during his time at Ball State, most recently the associate vice president for human resources and state relations.

Thomas Kinghorn, vice president for business affairs and treasurer, said a search committee has advertised the opening and is accepting applications and building a candidate pool. No time table has been set for when the it will be filled. The length of the hiring process depends on the pool of candidates, he said.

"We're looking forward to adding some excellent personnel," Kinghorn said.

Morrison left Ball State in October to take a position as associate vice president for public affairs and government relations for Indiana University. He couldn't be reached for comment.

Kinghorn said several administrators have pitched in to fulfill Morrison's former responsibilities rather than appointing an interim replacement.

Alan Hargrave, associate dean of student affairs, is the head of the eight-person search committee. It advertised the opening in typical ways, he said, through professional association mailing lists.

He said the position's responsibilities include supervising employee relations, human resource functions and employee payroll benefits.

Hargrave has been reviewing applications for minimum qualifications, he said. When the committee is finished receiving applications, it will search for candidates who have experience in human resources, finance and employee benefits and have strong leadership and analytical skills, Hargrave said.

He has seen significant interest in the position, he said, but hasn't set a deadline to begin interviews or a certain number of applications the committee will accept. The committee wants to fill the position as soon as possible.

"We're trying to uncover high quality candidates," Hargrave said. "It certainly is a very important position for the university. We're going to do every thing we can to run a fair and efficient [hiring] process."
