Wishbone to open new store

Shop part of larger business expansion in area, landlord says

Wishbone Gifts will expand to the Village where several businesses are expected to open over the next few months.

Rod Crossland, owner of Wishbone Gifts, said the store, which will be called 420 Underground, will open in January at 420 N. Martin St. under Creole Kid. It will sell posters, tapestries, incense, tobacco products, body jewelry and more.

Building landlord Myles Ogea said he is excited to fill the office space with Crossland's store.

"Rod's store will be a great addition to the Village," Ogea said. "I've been wanting to get him on board for quite some time because of his energy and good operation he runs in the downtown location."

Ogea said leases for other student-oriented businesses in the Village will be signed soon. Ogea would not release the names of the new business, but he expects them to open in the next three to four months.

Crossland said 420 Underground will be a smaller version of Wishbone Gifts and will help fill the void left when the Discount Den closed.

Since the Den shut down, Wishbone Gifts has noticed an increase in sales, Crossland said. After seven years in business there has been a steady growth in demand for hookah and shisha, which were featured products at both stores.

Apart from the loss of a competitor, Crossland said, his store's increased business is also a result of fair prices, good service and local advertising.

More cash flow in the store will allow Crossland to stock Wishbone Gifts with a larger selection of merchandise for the upcoming holiday season.
