Ex-student takes guilty plea

Beating sentencing set for late October

A former Ball State University student awaits a Delaware County judge's decision later this month to determine if she will spend up to a year in prison, according to Delaware County officials.

Amanda Polson, 20, pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of criminal recklessness resulting in serious bodily injury.

The former student was arrested last year on suspicion of being part of a group that attacked an Ivy League Community College student at a party north of Ball State's campus.

After the arrest, Polson was charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury. The Class C felony would have carried a standard four-year prison term, but the charges fell to those of a Class D felony with Polson's plea bargain.

Class D felony convictions typically carry an 18-month prison sentence, according to the Indiana Code.

But, according to the terms of the plea agreement, Polson cannot be sentenced to more than a year in prison.

The agreement also allows Polson to request her conviction be dropped from a felony to a misdemeanor at a later date.

Polson will go before Circuit Court 3 Judge Robert Barnet Jr. on Oct. 27 for her sentencing.

Polson was arrested along with former students Rene Whiteley, Ashley Kirkman, Kari Streib and Alysse Popov last year in connection with the beating.

According to police reports, one of the women had an argument about Muncie resident Christina Elslingler's boyfriend. Elslingler was attacked by the five women, and her boyfriend had to pull the group off her, according to reports.

Elslinger underwent reconstructive surgery to repair her elbow after the attack. The women later bragged about the incident on Facebook.

Whiteley, Kirkman and Streib are scheduled to stand trail later this month.
