Ball State University students and members of the Muncie and Indianapolis community came together Sunday to support Mel's 5k Run and Walk sponsored by the Delta Zeta sorority.
The walk and run was held in memory of Delta Zeta sister Melissa Steckler, who died in 2001 from a burn accident, Delta Zeta member Sarah Russell said. Steckler spent time at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis where money raised from the event will be donated.
Every fall since 2001, Delta Zeta has hosted a memory walk in Steckler's name. The walk was usually friends and family members, said Russell. This year the sorority decided to add the 5k walk and run.
"I think it really helped boost participation," Russell said. "It boosted competition."
She said Delta Zeta also advertised the event. Mel's Walk and Run had more than 130 competitors ranging from students to alumni and community members.
"It was really fun, but a little early," Austin Gerber, director of philanthropy and community service for Delta Tau Delta fraternity, said. "The girls did a good job at mapping out the course."
The first place male and female running winners were Khelli Leicch and Sherry Robertson. Andrea Braden won the award of top walker. Russell said all winners were awarded trophies.
