WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: BSU falls to CMU in MAC opener

Coach says Cardinals 'haven't learned how to win yet' after loss

The Ball State University women's volleyball team was unable to take advantage of an early lead and lost in its Mid-American Conference opening match to Central Michigan University (24-26, 26-24, 25-19, 25-21) Friday.

With the loss, the Cardinals (4-11, 0-1 MAC) move to 0-5 this season in Worthen Arena.

"We had players playing in their first MAC match, and we made some young mistakes there at the end of the second set," coach Dave Boos said. "[Central Michigan is] a team that's full of juniors and seniors, and they've been playing together for a couple years. They had some points that they've learned how to win and we haven't learned to win yet."

Ball State won the first set behind 15 Cardinals' kills and a .235 attack percentage.

That mark would decrease as the match progressed, as Ball State hit .225 in the second set and .091 in the third set in a match that featured a combined 42 ties and 15 lead changes.

The Cardinals host another MAC West Division team, Eastern Michigan University, starting at 7 p.m. today at Worthen Arena.

Boos said he expects a never-let-die attitude from the Eagles.

"Eastern Michigan is always known to play really hard, hard-nosed defense," Boos said. "They're a tough team, so for us it's going to be matching their intensity and their competitiveness in that match because they're not going to let anything fall."
