WOMEN'S TENNIS: Coach happy after first day of invite

Cards win almost half of opening matches at Cardinal Creek

Ball State University women's tennis coach Kathy Bull was not focused on the wins and losses after day one of the Ball State Invitational.

Rather it was what her team can do to improve for today's day two.

"I had the players sit in a circle and say something they did well in their matches and then something they could improve on," Bull said, "Everyone was having the same weaknesses. We were forcing too many shots and not being patient. We also need to serve a lot better."

Bull said she was pleased overall with her players after the first day of the Cardinals' season-opening tournament at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.

"The women came out with a bit of anxiety, but we had a lot of energy," Bull said.

After day one, all players in the tournament have played at least two singles and two doubles matches. Bull said she was also content with the play and organization of the first half of the invitational.

"We've had great weather and were able to play a lot of tennis," Bull said, "We've had a lot of cooperation with all the teams here, too."

Ball State won almost half of its first-round singles and doubles matches on day one. In the singles draw, however, there are no Cardinals represented in the winners' bracket.

Even though there wasn't a big surprise in day one for the Cardinals, Bull said, she found out a few new things about her players.

"I only had to watch one side of the net," Bull said, "At practice, I have to coach both players on either side of the court."

Bull also said she was impressed with freshmen Sarah Hebble and Kristin McKinney after their day one matches.

Hebble defeated Dayton's Chelsea Glanker 6-3, 6-3 in Flight B, and McKinney won a doubles match against Dayton 8-3.

"Sarah is a tough competitor and will have a good career ahead of her," Bull said, "Kristin played very well in her doubles match with Dena Boulieris earlier [Friday]. She had very good doubles instincts on the court."
