Playing in its own backyard seemed to pay off for the Ball State University women's golf team as it captured another Cardinal Classic on Tuesday.
The Cardinals set two school records and finished ahead of second place the University of Akron by seven strokes.
"Each individual played exceptionally well," coach Katherine Mowat said. "We had some fantastic team play and had a good position coming into the second round."
Mowat's team set an 18-hole school record, shooting a 292 Tuesday, and shot a 594 overall to obtain the program record for a 36-hole event.
"We are very satisfied with our performance," sophomore Brittany Kelly said. "It's pretty awesome breaking a school record, especially at home."
The Cardinals finished with an 18-over-par. Freshman KC Cain (+1), sophomore Brittany Kelly (+4) and junior Kirsty O'Connor (+4) each finished in the top 10.
"This just shows how hard our team has worked," Mowat said. "We have a very talented group and want to celebrate each individual accomplishments."
Ball State sunk 22 birdies this tournament, with Cain and Kelly having six a piece.
"We as a team put together a good tournament," Kelly said.
On the last eight holes of the classic, three out of the four Ball State players had a 3-under-par. The fourth finished even.
"KC Cain finished really well which helped out our team a lot," Mowat said.
Next in line for the Cardinals is another two-day tournament in Akron on Monday and Tuesday, followed by a trip to the University of Iowa Oct. 4-Oct. 5.
"We have to go out and practice hard, but also get our studies done first," Kelly said. "We travel a lot so by now we are used to it."
