Vince Gill croons with acoustic act

Emens staff expects crowd of 3,000 to attend performance

Just in time for Homecoming weekend, Vince Gill will be gracing Emens Auditorium this Saturday at 8 p.m. with an array of country music. Gill started his musical career during high school, where his bluegrass band, Mountain Smoke, cultivated a large following and eventually opened a concert for popular country band, Pure Prairie League.

Gill got his musical break in the late 1970s when he joined Pure Prairie League as their lead singer. He recorded three albums with the band, including his first top 10 hit, "Let Me Love You Tonight." Other hit songs Gill recorded after his stint in Pure Prairie League includes "Cinderella" from his album, "The Way Back Home" and "The Heart Won't Lie," a duet that he cut with Reba McEntire on her album "It's Your Call."

In 2006 Gill released his latest solo album, "These Days," a four-disc with more than forty new songs of different musical styles.

Overall, Gill has sold more than 26 million albums and received 18 Country Music Association awards. He is second only to Brooks and Dunn for the most CMA awards in history and holds the most Grammy awards of any male country artist. Gill said he is heavily influenced by Chet Atkins, Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline, as well as the Beatles and Led Zeppelin.

Gill will be perform an entirely acoustic act tomorrow at Emens, which has the staff at Emens particularly excited.

"I feel very positive about this concert," Emens director Bob Myers said. "It has been many years since Vince performed here, and he's an artist that brings many in our community to this campus."

In the past, Emens has had many other popular country acts perform, including Keith Urban, Willie Nelson, Sugarland, Trace Adkins and Rascal Flatts.

"It's always nice to bring concerts that people get excited about," associate director of marketing Darci Wood said. "The night of the show is always fun. The energy is high, and everyone is here to have a great time."

Wood said she expects about 3,000 people to attend the event. Seat prices range from $35 to $50. For tickets, visit the Emens box office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or two hours before the show starts. Check out Vince Gill online at vincegill.com.
