Touting their talent

19 acts compete in vocal, dance and instrumental showcase; vie for chance to win $1,000 scholarship

Charlie's Angels, a group composed of six freshmen and one sophomore, admitted their performance Tuesday night's had been their first together onstage.

But "excitement, shock and disbelief" were the first words that came out of group member Sam Lopez's mouth after it was announced as overall Talent Search winner.

"It was a wonderful experience for us," Lopez, said. "We really enjoyed it."

Lopez said members of the group were in choir together and heard about the event, and some of them had been involved in different events like this one in high school before.

Previously, Charlie's Angels stepped up to the stage and performed Ben E. King's "Stand By Me", acting and singing with a fluidity that captivated both the audience and judges.

However, the other participants at the event had been a tough competition.

From a close match to the voice of Johnny Cash to a tap routine, students that came walking in and out of Emens Auditorium Tuesday night made this year's Homecoming Talent Search a success.

Last night the Ball State community witnessed many student talents, and audience members came out of the show saying they were satisfied with the acts and the results.

Freshman Cyreesa Raber said she attended the show just to satisfy her curiosity but she found out that attending this event had been a great idea after all.

"I think it was really good, a lot better than I thought it would be," she said.

The event opened with a performance of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Insomnia.

The audience thought they'd seen everything when vocalist Adam Hendrickson impersonated Freddie Mercury and played the guitar, surrounded by trumpets, saxophones, a bass, a drum set and a piano;

But this was just the start of what came to be a mix of genuine skill presented by all the participants of the search.

Immediately after Insomnia's performance, Jim Gedda followed with an original composition and sang with a voice that could be easily matched to Johnny Cash's, which aroused murmurs across the crowd.

And so the event continued with singers and dancers performing and having the audience stick their eyes to the stage.

"I think every participant was really good," Raber said. "But I couldn't really decide who the winner would be."

The event closed with the introduction of the royalty candidates and the homecoming steering committee, and an exhibition by last year's talent search's winner Michael Humphrey.

The audience was satisfied with the variety among the participants and talents. The participants; however, were satisfied with the opportunity of demonstrating their acts and the chance of winning a $1,000 scholarship.

"It's a great competition, just to showcase everybody," Humphrey said. "Just get everyone involved and put it all in a competition."
