Student Honors Council to host first-ever concert

"The Battle" raises awareness to prove Honors College not all just academics

Honors College sophomore Andy Ayers is familiar with the stereotypes about honors students. But as co-chair of publicity for the Student Honors Council, he said he is planning to do something about them.

Ayers and the rest of the Honors Council will put on "The Battle" - a battle of the bands event - 3 p.m. Saturday at the grassy area between Botsford and Swinford halls.

He said he is hoping "The Battle" will help dispel some of the misconceptions about the Honors College and its students.

"We're trying to show that the Honors College does a lot of fun stuff, too," he said. "It's not just books."

Laura Gilbert, the other co-chair of publicity, said the event is also to help students campus wide learn about the Honors College and the Student Honors Council.

"It's really press for the Honors Council," she said. "We've never done an activity like this."

The event will feature both bands and solo artists and attendees will vote for their favorite performers by making free-will donations in containers during the performances. Whoever earns the most money will be declared the winner and will receive a cash prize. However, all proceeds from the event will go to charity.

Will Jay, president of the Student Honors Council, said he thinks the charity aspect of the event will also help bridge any cross-campus divides.

"It's great exposure for the musicians," he said. "People who are there for charity, who wouldn't ordinarily hear their music, will be able to."

Gilbert said because the bands are not required to have any affiliation with the Honors College, she hopes it will encourage non-Honors College students to attend.

"Music can unite the campus," she said.

And according to Jay, the other great unifying force - free food - will also be in abundance.

Gilbert said she is optimistic about the event's potential.

"We want it to be crowds and crowds of people," she said. "We want something that can be annual. We want something that can be a big deal. It's going to be a good time. And that's not something you'd expect from the Honors College."
