Student Government Association President Frank Hood is adding to his list of duties after the Ball State University senators approved him to the Campus and University councils.
Despite having classes and attending meetings for his SGA duties, now he will add an hour-long, weekly meeting the third and fourth Thursday of each month to his schedule.
Hood said the councils, which are subsets of the University Senate, would not be a hindrance because he already blocked the time out of his schedule to attend University Senate, which he automatically has a seat on for being SGA president. Being on councils that primarily have faculty and administrators would not deter from his job of representing the students' voice, he said.
"The idea of students who sit [on the councils] is to make sure students' voices are heard," Hood said.
During Wednesday's meeting, Treasurer Moses Jones also informed the senators that Campus Alliance completed its fan bus platform item. He said SGA partnered with University Program Board to have a second bus go to the Sept. 20 Ball State vs. Indiana University game.
"UPB will have a bus, and SGA will have one as well," Jones said.
Students interested in riding the bus can sign up at the SGA office in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center, Room 233. The cost is $10.
The senators also met in their caucuses and committees to discuss plans and issues they wanted to tackle for the year.
Below is what they discussed:
Caucus Reports:
Organizational: Chairman Marco Pretell-Vazquez said the Latino Student Union would have salsa nights from 9 p.m. until midnight beginning Monday at the mt cup. He also said Student Voluntary Services programs would begin next week.
At Large: Chairwoman Michelle Voss said she and her caucus would begin researching payroll options and get students who now receive stipends to get paid hourly. She said as it is now, some students who make stipends earn less than the minimum wage. After a little more research she would write legislation on the matter.
Committee Reports:
Governmental Affairs and Student Awareness: Chairman Tim Dykiel said the idea to have a Senate meeting at the Atrium was tentatively set for Oct. 1. He said his committee also would consider having a drop box for students' "bold" ideas of campus issues, so it would be a place to voice their concerns.
Student Safety: Chairwoman Michelle Voss said she e-mailed Director of Public Safety Gene Burton about men attempting to sell magazines to women. Burton said the University Police Department was handling the matter. He said the police responded to six calls since Aug. 26. Police found the men from those calls and issued them trespass warnings.
Student Services: Chairwoman Nicole Akey said she would speak with Parking Services Office Manager Nancy Wray about freshmen who have received tickets for parking in the grass at Scheumann Stadium despite there not being enough parking spaces.
