After being involved with the Ball State University men's basketball team for the last two seasons, Jay Newberry will get a chance to be on the bench during game day.
Newberry was promoted from director of basketball operations to an assistant coach Wednesday to finalize the Cardinals coaching staff for the upcoming season.
"I'm looking forward to working with the staff and winning some games," Newberry said.
As an assistant, coach Newberry said, he will transition from an operational position to scouting opponents and working with the players at practice.
Prior to being at Ball State, Newberry was an assistant coach at Augusta State University, a Division II school, for two seasons. He also was an assistant coach at Belmont Abby College and Thomas More College.
Newberry said he always tried to work as hard as possible when he was the Cardinals' director of basketball operations, and he is excited for the new experience, he said.
Matt Laur, who was an assistant coach at Missouri Southern University, will replace Newberry as the director of basketball operations.
Newberry will join Bob Simmons and Joseph Price as assistant coaches for the upcoming season. Simmons and Price were both Ball State assistant coaches last season.
Ball State finished last season 6-24 and was eliminated in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Newberry said he is looking forward to the upcoming season. The Cardinals have yet to release their schedule for the 2008-09 season.
"I'm very excited for the new group of guys," he said. "We have new faces to the team, and I'm looking forward to working with the guys."
