A week after facing one of the best running quarterbacks in the country, Ball State's defense will line up against perhaps the best scrambling quarterback in the Mid-American Conference. Through four games, Kent State quarterback Julian Edelman is sixth in the conference with 304 rushing yards. Edelman has the most rushing yards of any quarterback in the conference and has 86 yards more than Central Michigan's Dan LeFevour.
2. Ball State kickoff return vs. Kent State kickoff coverage
This looks like a strength for Ball State. The Cardinals are ranked third in the MAC kickoff return, while Kent State is ranked ninth in kickoff coverage. But with the loss of kick returner Dante Love, whose 24.5 yards-per-return average is second among those with 10 kick returns, freshman Toriel Green has a big void to fill.
3. Ball State penalties vs. Kent State penalties
Both teams are the best in the conference when it comes to not hurting themselves. Kent State has been the most disciplined team this year, averaging a league-best 29.8 penalty yards per game. Ball State is second with 33.2 penalty yards per game.
4. Ball State third-down offense vs. Kent State third-down offense
Ball State's offense has been the best in the MAC in keeping the chains moving on third downs, converting 21 of 38 plays for a 55.3 clip. Kent State's defense has been the second best in the conference at getting the ball back to its defense, stopping opponents 21 out of 56 times for a 37.5 percent clip.
5. Ball State pass rush vs. Kent State pass protect
Part of Kent State's issues in its passing game -¡- ranked last place in the conference - has involved its offensive line. The Golden Flashes have struggled protecting quarterback Julian Edelman, allowing eight sacks in four games and being tied for ninth-most sacks in the MAC. Conversely, Ball State has accumulated eight sacks in four games this year.
