A Ball State University football player, who is also the nephew of coach Brady Hoke, was suspended from the team after being arrested last weekend.
Safety Kyle Hoke was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and minor consumption Saturday, according to a police report from the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.
"Kyle Hoke has been suspended from the Ball State football team for [Friday] night's game against Navy for a violation of team policy," Brady Hoke said in a statement. "We are disappointed in the actions which led to this suspension and will work with the university to resolve this matter. He made a mistake and showed very poor judgment. We are thankful nobody was injured, and we will work with Kyle to educate him and help him make better decisions."
Kyle Hoke declined to comment on the arrest.
Hoke was pulled over in his 2002 black Chevrolet SUV after he failed to use the center turn lane or his left turn signal while turning onto McKinley Avenue from Jackson Street at approximately 3:15 a.m. Saturday, according to the police report. When the officer approached Hoke's vehicle, he could smell alcohol on the 19-year-old's breath, according to the report.
The freshman from Sugar Land, Texas, failed all three of the standardized field sobriety tests he took and then blew a .105 on a Breathalyzer test, according to the report.
Hoke was booked into the Delaware County jail and released at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, according to jail officials. Driving while intoxicated and minor consumption are both Class C misdemeanors in Indiana. If convicted, Hoke could face up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine for each of the misdemeanors.
Hoke did not record any tackles in Ball State's 48-14 season-opener win against Northeastern University Aug. 28. Today's home game against Navy, for which Hoke is suspended, is being televised nationally on ESPN.
In addition to being the nephew of Brady Hoke, Kyle Hoke is also the son of Jon Hoke, who is a defensive backs coach for the Houston Texans. Jon Hoke also played for Ball State from 1976-79 and played in the NFL for the Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs. Kyle Hoke's mother, Jody Hoke, is a former Ball State Homecoming Queen and the daughter of a former Ball State assistant football coach.
